Details of Lorton Tennis Club – Newsletter: April 2018

Already the evenings are lengthening and our thoughts are turning to the Tennis Summer Season. This is the first newsletter for a year. We have been sending out messages via Clubspark but the committee thought it might be nice to have an occasional newsletter that you can print out and refer too. There will be masses of info in it so please read carefully and keep a copy for reference.

Most of you have now paid your membership for this year. If you haven’t please visit the club website and follow the instructions on the membership page. There are some changes to membership this year. The committee have introduced a couple’s membership to encourage ‘other halves’ to join and would like all juniors having coaching to become club members.

Adult £90
Adult over 70 £70
Juniors at primary school £10
Juniors at senior school £25

New players are welcome to try before they buy by booking a court online via the website for £10/hour. This can be refunded from membership if they subsequently decide to join.
Please note that the number on the combination padlocks will be changed on Sunday 6th May. Provided you have paid membership by then you should receive an email with the new combination.

This season the Club Championships 2018 will be organised by Rachel Wilson.
Finals day has been set for Saturday 8th September (if wet Sunday 9th September). Please put this date in your diary!!!
This seasons tournament is designed to be more inclusive with Rachel arranging your partner for the doubles events. Hopefully this will encourage all club members to have a go! Please see Rachel’s message below

Hi all,
I’m not sure what was in the wine at the AGM but apparently, I volunteered to run the tournament this year!!
I would really love to make it a very inclusive event and hopefully encourage a bigger turn out on finals day to make for a good social occasion. I have very fond memories of my village finals day where I grew up as it was always a complete mix of abilities.
As such I propose that in the doubles events I will draw partners entirely at random rather than people entering as a partnership and I would LOVE as many people as possible to enter.
So that we get a good finals day with all finals being played on the day there will be a strict policy that if you are unavailable on finals day and you are about to win the semi-final then you scratch at match point and the other pair go through.
The same will happen in the singles.
In order that all matches are ready to be played in time I will be RUTHLESS in reminding people about deadlines by which matches need to be played.
Date for finals day is Saturday 8th September with Sunday 9th September if wet.
I look forward to receiving your entries – by 15th May please to the email address below stating which events you would like to enter.

Rachel Wilson

Competition categories are: –
– Mens Singles
– Mens Doubles
– Ladies Singles
– Ladies Doubles
– Mixed Doubles

The closing date for entries to the Lorton Tennis Club Championships is
Tuesday 15th May

This year the Ladies teams are being managed by Emma Beattie and Julie Best. Ladies who would like to play in league matches, which are spread over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from mid May – early July, should contact Emma 01900 67931/07765067288.
Two teams are entered in the West Cumbria League this year, one in each division. Men’s Captain Graham Morgan is managing the 1st team and Tony Norman the 2nd. Please contact them if you are interested in playing team tennis.

Chris Lockyer is our Club coach and can be contacted on 07900286909. He is currently running junior coaching on a Thursday evening and Ladies coaching on a Monday evening at 7pm. If you would like a private lesson or would like to suggest a group session, please contact Chris or a committee member.
Congratulations to Rob Cruikshank who is now an LTA level 2 coach and will be able to help with the coaching.

The club has been very fortunate to secure some grant funding from Cumbria county council and the Cumberland Building Society which will enable a court to be resurfaced this year. A date has been booked with Leisure surfaces in June and the committee is working to finalise details.

Please use the online court booking available via the club website, your own club spark account or by downloading the Clubspark booker app for your smart phone (free from your usual app store). Visitors can also book and pay for a court this way.
There are three Whats App groups running in the club. They are very useful to find someone to play with, make up a 4 or check the weather etc. If you would like to be added please contact Joe Broomfield on 07855688026 (general group), Chris Macleod on 07889181080 (Sunday social group), or Emma Beattie on 07765067288 (ladies coaching group).

SATURDAY friendly sessions continue. Everyone is welcome. The start is around 10am and lasts for 2/3hours.
SUNDAY similar format to Saturday. Starts at 4pm through the summer. There is a Whats app group running if you want to check other’s availability. See above.
MONDAY MORNING. A group of ladies enjoy informal Ladies Doubles every Monday Morning at 10am. If you are interested in joining the group please contact:-Elspeth White
WEDNESDAY MORNING. A group of men play, contact Tony Norman and a group of ladies, contact Judy Hudson

Please do not park on the grass as it becomes very muddy and untidy looking and muddy shoes may cause slips and damage to court surfaces. Thank you.

Everyone is welcome to make use of the machine. Contact a committee member if you need tuition on its use. We tend to ‘lose’ the balls over time so if anyone has older balls they no longer need please bring them down to the club and they will be put to good use in the ball machine.

When you have finished with old balls please place them in the orange bucket just inside the changing room door. The club will receive 20p/ball and the balls will be put to further good use and not end up in landfill or rivers.
